Synopsis

An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. As they navigate the tournament’s pressures, the eccentric group finds a new sense of belonging. Along the way, they learn that there is more to life than winning a trophy. This charming coming-of-age tale also invites four volunteers from the audience to participate in each performance, ensuring new and unexpected comedy every show. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box. A riotous ride, complete with audience participation, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a delightful den of comedic genius.

How to sign up?

For Basic Technical Crew:

If you just want to be part of basic crew (a non-designer/assistant position) all you need to do is fill out the form and you are in! SIGN UP BY THURSDAY 1/5.

For Designers and Assistants: (PLEASE READ)

  • You must also fill out the tech form here, but in order to be considered for a Designer or Assistant role, you must interview with me! Interview will take place on January 5th from 4:00p-6:00p. Interviews will last no longer than 5 minutes if you come prepared and have your form completed! If that day or time doesn’t work, we can figure out at time to interview virtually! Sign up for a time slot here
  • Please come prepared to present your vision/concept for the show. Please do some research!

Who/What is involved with the Mood Board: the mood board is just a collage of images that showcase what your vision is for the show. Since Showcase is more of a variety show rather than a story play, think about what kind of elements you want to provide to the production. You can be as creative as you want, there are no right or wrong answers!

  • Scenic and Lighting – ideas of color, location, etc… for what you would like to use for the showcase. Be creative!!!
  • Costumes and Hair & Makeup – 2 costume looks
  • Props – 1 or 2 props that could be used
  • Sound – 1 or 2 sound effects (this you can bring for the actual interview and play on your phone, laptop or iPad)
  • Stage Management – I will provide questions for you but if you have paperwork from previous shows you are more than welcomed to bring it in!
