Happy Monday and Happy HOPE Week!

The Black American author and poet we celebrate today is Amanda Gorman. She was born in 1998, so she is now 25 years old. While she was an award-winning writer at Harvard, Gorman became the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate. Gorman rose to fame in 2021 for writing and delivering her poem “The Hill We Climb” at President Joe Biden’s inauguration; you can listen to this poem by clicking the QR code on the display case. Fun fact: she was inspired by the writings of Toni Morrison and Maya Angelou. This is a quote of hers that we liked:

“Since the world is round

There is no way to walk away

From each other, for even then

We are coming back together.”

To kick it off Hope Week, Hope Squad bracelets were passed out this morning before school to remind everyone about our mission to break down the stigma surrounding mental illness and to spread hope! Each day before school or during lunch Hope Squad will host an activity to promote positivity and wellness. Today a minute to think about 5 things you’re grateful for and share it with a friend. Practicing gratitude over time helps us notice more good things around us. Obstacles and challenges will always be there but gratitude helps us invest more time, energy, and attention into the good stuff. Every day during Hope Week, Hope Squad will hide 5 “Hope Hearts” throughout the school with a “hope moment” written on the back. Starting today, if you find one, you can turn it into Mrs. Stanley in the Quad for a Panda Buck! More to come tomorrow!”

All month we will be collecting items for Cinderella’s closet.  They are in need of formal dresses (that are less than 3 years old and in good shape), formal shoes, fancy jewelry and handbags.  If you have items that you would like to donate, we will have bins in the office.
