NDA Science Research Students Place at 2013 International Genius Olympiad

Three Notre Dame Academy science research students recently brought home medals after placing at the 2013 International Genius Olympiad. NDA’s Cassidy Ryan, Giannina Rokvic, and Ellen Kendall attended the Genius Olympiad in Oswego, New York, from June 16 to 21.  The event promotes a global understanding of environmental issues and included about 550 qualifiers from over 60 countries.

Each of these Notre Dame Academy students participated at Genius Olympiad in the science category (including Environmental Quality, Ecology and Biodiversity,  Resources and Energy, and  Human Ecology).  Rokvic was awarded a bronze medal for her work on removing newspaper ink from paper by means of a micro emulsion. Kendall received a silver award for work with generating biofuel from encapsulated yeast, and Ryan also was awarded silver for her studies of the biological effects of artificial sweeteners in wastewater. These three young women developed their projects as part of Notre Dame Academy’s Science Research class under the direction of Sr. Mary Ethel Parrott, SND.
