College Financial Aid

Below we have compiled information and links to assist you with the College Financial Aid process.

Step 1 to filling out the FAFSA:

Get your FSA ID's:

  • What is a FSA ID?  FSA ID's are required in order to apply for Financial Aid.
    • You will use these ID's to sign your online FAFSA, make corrections, and more.
    • The "FSA ID" replaces "PIN Numbers" required in the past. Pin Numbers have been phased out and all students (even students already in college) and parents need to get a new FSA ID.
  • Who needs a "FSA ID"? The student needs to get an ID and one parent will need a FSA ID.
    • Which parent? If parents are not married, the parent who's information will be on the FAFSA will get the FSA ID.
    • 📣 Students!!! Use your personal email address (not NDA email); you will complete the FAFSA every year of college...and need this email address to be still active.
  • How do we get ID's?

Financial Aid - Frequently Asked Questions:

When can we apply for Financial Aid by completing the FAFSA?

  • The FAFSA cannot be submitted until October 1st of a high school student’s senior year.

What are the Steps to Applying for Federal Student Aid?

  • Visit the Federal Student Aid Information Site for information about all aspects of the Financial Aid Process.  Information includes: who gets aid, the types of aid available, and how to apply.  This site has links to many other resources to assist you in the Financial Aid process. To learn specifically about Filling Out the FAFSA, click here: Filling Out the FAFSA.
  • Gather the documents needed to apply. For example, you'll need income tax returns (yours and most likely your parents), W-2 forms, and other records of income, and identification documents (social security cards, drivers licenses). Get the complete list of documents by clicking here: Documents Needed for FAFSA.
  • Apply for a "FSA ID" - This is required and you will use it to sign your online FAFSA, make corrections, and more. The "FSA ID" has replaced the "PIN Numbers" required in the past.  Pin Numbers have been phased out and all students (even students already in college) and parents will now need to get a FSA ID.
    • Who needs a "FSA ID"? Both the student and one parent will need a FSA ID.
    • When can we get ID's? You can get your ID's anytime; you do not have to wait until Oct. 1st.
    • How do we get ID's? To apply for your "FSA ID", go to: FSA ID Website
  • Starting on October 1st, you can fill out your FAFSA online. The process is free. Never pay to apply for federal financial aid. Applying for federal student aid is done online and is fairly quick and user-friendly.

Is there a way to ESTIMATE what I might receive from Financial Aid?

  • Yes, it is highly recommended that you visit the website of each school where students are applying to access the school's NET PRICE CALCULATOR.  Schools are required by law to provide a NET PRICE CALCULATOR on their websites.  These are free tools that give prospective students an estimate of the cost to attend each college.
  • You can also use the FAFSA 4 Caster to estimate your federal financial aid eligibility. To utilize the FAFSA 4 Caster, visit: Estimate Your Aid

Do students need to fill out and submit a FAFSA every year they are in college?

  • Yes, students will need to complete the FAFSA every year they are in college. For example, starting October 1st of a student’s freshman year of college he/she must complete the FAFSA again. They will use their same ID and the Parent ID will be used again as well.

What are the deadlines for submitting the FAFSA?

  • Schools have FAFSA deadlines and these deadlines vary from school to school.  It is critical to meet the FAFSA deadlines set forth by the school(s) a student is applying to.  See the Financial Aid page on each college website to determine their FAFSA deadlines.

Where can I get assistance if I have questions about Financial Aid or filling out the FAFSA?

Where does Financial Aid come from?

  • Federal Aid - The federal government offers financial aid in the form of grantsloans, and federal work-study programs. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the form that must be submitted in order to qualify for Federal Aid.
  • State Aid - Individual states may offer student financial aid, but eligibility for state aid is based on results from the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  A student cannot qualify to receive state aid if he/she does not file the FAFSA.
  • Institutional Aid - Individual schools can offer student financial aid as well.  Most schools only require that students fill out the FAFSA to be considered for institutional aid.  However, some schools also require students to fill out the CSS Profile in order to receive institutional aid.  To find out if a school requires the CSS Profile, go to the Admissions webpage, Financial Aid webpage, or contact an Admissions Counselor at the school.  To learn more about the CSS Profile click here: CSS Profile Information.
