Help with "The Common Application"

  • Super important!  Make sure you "Invite" me as your counselor on the Common Application!
    • When you are working on your Common Application, you want to make sure you "Invite" me as your Counselor.
    • STEPS:
      1. You will have to type my name and information into the Common Application in a few different places.
      2. It will ask you for this information in the "Education" section of the Common Application (the mothership).
      3. It will also ask you for this information when you go into your School(s) tab to work on their supplement.
      4. After you enter in this information...you are not done.  :(
      5. There is one more step.  You need to "Invite" me.  So click the "Invite" button next to my name.
How to make sure you did this correctly?
  • Click on the "My Colleges" Tab
  • Click on 1 of your schools (see screen shot below, this student clicked on "Case Western Reserve University")
  • Click on the "Recommenders and FERPA" section of that school's supplement.
  • After you click on the Recommenders and FERPA section, here is what you should see if you have "Invited" me: (See "Invited" in the red type in the below screen shot?) (That is the key!) (If you see this...you are good!)
  • WHY IMPORTANT? If you do not 'Invite' me as your counselor, you will not show up on my list of students (in my Common App account).  If you are not on my list of students, I cannot submit your transcript/school information to your Common App School(s).   :(
    • Here's my information you'll need for the Common App and other Applications too:
      • Ms. Kelly Burgei
      • Title: School Counselor
      • 859-261-4300
      • burgeik@ndapandas.org

  • One more Common Application Reminder...
    • You will fill out 1 Pink Form per school...even if you are using the Common Application to apply to several schools.  You will turn in a Pink Form for each of those schools.

College Applications & Staying Organized:

  • College Application Checklist (THE BEST LITTLE HAND-OUT ON THIS PAGE!!)
    • Sit down for 30-45 minutes, look up application deadlines for each school you might apply to, and write them on this chart.  I guarantee you will feel at least a little (maybe a lot) better after doing this!
  • College Application Cheat Sheet
    • Time-Saver: Keep track of Activities, Service, Honors, etc. Then just copy and paste into applications! This Excel Spreadsheet comes in very handy when filling out applications!

Career Exploration:

  • iSEEK Careers Skills Assessment - This assessment is very helpful! I like it a lot!! Please check this out to further learn about careers that might be potential matches for your unique wiring.  :)
    • How long does it take? 10 minutes
    • Why should I do it? Deciding on a career is an extremely difficult task! I am convinced that two things are key:
      1. Knowing Ourselves more and more - Knowing our natural talents, values, passions, preferences for location/schedule/lifestyle
      2. Exploring what Career Options are out there - There are so many more careers out there than we know...and new ones can develop at any time.  This site is up-to-date and it also lets you know if an occupation is "In Demand".  If an occupation is "In Demand", there will be more job openings in coming years.

  • Financial Aid Information on NDA Website - We have assembled links to information about Financial Aid, the FAFSA, CSS Profile, and much more on this page.  Our goal is to give you access to a variety of Financial Aid resources all on one page.  :)
  • FAFSA4caster: The FAFSA4caster allows you to get an estimate of your eligibility for federal student aid.  This is basically an estimate of what kind of Aid you will get from the results of your FAFSA.
  • Highly Recommended! College Cost Calculators
    • Each school is required by law to have a Net Price Calculator or Estimate Calculator on their website.
    • Schools may call it different things, but you can find this tool on each school's Financial Aid portion of their website.
    • If you cannot locate this resource for a school, contact the school's admission counselor.

    • Resume Frequently Asked Questions: Resume FAQ's
    • To see a sample resume, click here: Sample Resume
    • NOTE: Your Resume WILL look different than this one.  I grabbed this from a student a few years ago because she did a good job with formatting it and the overall set-up.  She had a lot of academic awards...it is okay if you do not.  There is more to a Resume than this.  There is: Work Experience (babysitting counts!!), Volunteer Experience, Extracurriculars, Leadership Experience, Special Skills (Piano, saxophone, martial arts, dance, etc.)
