Department Philosophy

The purpose of the Social Studies program is to afford the student a working knowledge of the story of the world in which she lives.  The primary aims of the program are to create an awareness in the student of her place in the world and her Christian responsibility to it.

Department Learner Goals

  •  Students will demonstrate an ability to read and interpret maps, as well as demonstrate knowledge of significant locations. 
  •  Students will demonstrate a knowledge of the key facts, terms, and concepts of world history, American history, and current events
  •  Students will demonstrate an ability to analyze a variety of materials, including charts, graphs, primary sources, and works of art and literature
  •  Students will demonstrate an ability to relate the past to current events
  •  Students will be exposed to a variety of interrelated disciplines, such political science, psychology, economics, geography, art, literature, and philosophy
  •  Students will be exposed to the concepts of good citizenship and demonstrate a knowledge of the foundations of American government
  •  Students will demonstrate a sense of responsibility toward the world
  •  Students will demonstrate an appreciation for the contributions made by diverse religious, ethnic, and racial groups
  •  Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation for gender roles
