Heritage

Notre Dame Academy, owned and operated by the Sisters of Notre Dame, is blessed with a heritage rich in tradition. In 1874, it began as a school for children in grades kindergarten through eight, with an additional two-year commercial school. After a high school program was added to the curriculum in 1906, Sister Mary Agnetis served as principal for forty years. However, due to the rapidly increasing high school enrollment, it was necessary to close the elementary school in 1937 to accommodate the growing secondary level program.

During the 1950’s, the building on Fifth Street began to show its age as the enrollment escalated to record numbers. Because it was impractical to renovate such an old facility, the decision was made to build a new Notre Dame Academy on the Provincial House grounds in Park Hills. Through the generosity of alumnae, friends, parents, and corporate sponsors such as Mr. Conrad Hilton, the dream of a new facility was realized. The new school on Hilton Drive was opened in October, 1963 with an enrollment of 562 students.

As a Catholic high school dedicated to Mary, Notre Dame Academy offers students an opportunity to grow in the knowledge and practice of faith.  We remain dedicated to the four cornerstones of the educational heritage of the Sisters of Notre Dame.
  • The dignity of the teacher
  • The worth of the individual
  • The centrality of religion
  • The thoroughness of instruction in all subjects.
